William Bumpus

William M. Bumpus (Bill), 85, of Charleston, SC entered into eternal rest on March 9, 2014.  He was born in Providence, KY on May 6, 1928, the second of eight children born to the union of Johnny O. and Thelma M. Bumpus.  His family moved to Toledo, OH in 1929.

Bill lived an extraordinary life, fulfilling his dream of becoming a pilot.  At the age of 17, he became the first African-American in Toledo to earn a pilot’s license.  In 1948, he was accepted into the Air Force’s flight program at Randolph AFB, Texas.  Despite attempts to eliminate him from the program, he successfully completed pilot training, becoming the youngest “shavetail” ever to receive his wings, and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant.  He spent 22 years in the Air Force, retiring in 1970 with the rank of Major.  During that time he flew the T-6 Texan, P-51 Mustang, B-25 Mitchell, P-80 Shooting Star (T-33), C-141A Starlifter, among many others.

Bill was a member of several Air Force Pistol teams, earning the title of Distinguished Pistol Shot.  He frequently competed at the National Pistol Matches at Camp Perry, OH from the late 1950’s through 2013.

In 1970, Bill joined the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as an Air Safety Inspector.  During his time there, he worked with Braniff Airways, TWA, Pan Am, Flying Tiger Line, Saudia Airlines,  American Airlines, United Airlines, and Atlas Air.  He was also an investigator for several high profile accidents including the collision of two Boeing 747 aircraft at Tenerife in the Canary Islands; PanAm Flight 103 in Lockerbie, Scotland; and TWA Flight 800 to name a few.   While with the FAA, he flew the DC-9, DC-10, L-1011, B-707, B-727, and B-747 (all models).

Upon retiring in 2003 with 55 years of dedicated service to the United States, he and his wife moved to Charleston. In 2004, for his contributions to Aviation Safety, Bill was the recipient of the Wright Brother’s  Master Pilot Award - the second person  ever to receive such an honor.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, son Robert (Karrie, deceased), and brothers, Johnny Jr., Jimmie Sr., and Jerry.

He leaves to cherish his memory, Lauretta , his loving wife of 56 years, children Cheryl, Michael, David, Catherine, Stefani, and Staci Muhammad (Robert), siblings Ann V. Brown (Leon), Bonnie Jean Cranon (Donald), Reuben Sr. (Judann, deceased), Robert L. Sr. (Patricia), and sister-in-law Shirley J. Bumpus (Jimmie, deceased),  and 14 grandchildren as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
